Will,

I think a lot folks have had the same reaction. As my work involves issues at the intersection of the Bill of Rights and “national security,” I think it’s important to understand that the FBI’s role in domestic surveillance and political repression/influence operations goes back to the very beginning of the Bureau in 1908. It’s also part of the larger landscape of such government activities that I chronicle in a project called American Big Brother: A Century of Political Surveillance and Repression. I hope you and other concerned Americans will use this opportunity to let our politicians know that mass surveillance and political repression/influence operations directed at our citizens and political process should 1) end immediately and 2) result in the firing of all involved. These episodes repeat precisely because nobody in government gets prosecuted or loses their job for engaging in it.
